Maryland Jockey Club owner Frank Stronach has proposed building a multimillion-dollar commercial development next to the Laurel Park racetrack, according to the Washington Business Journal.

Earlier this year, Stronach acquired Laurel Park, Pimlico racetrack in Baltimore and a training center in Bowie, Md.

Various levels of approval still are required before the project, which would include a 350-room hotel and 1,000 apartments, can break ground. Stronach plans to build about 1.5 million square feet of commercial space, including offices and shops, on about 350 acres in Anne Arundel and Howard counties.

The Department of State is seeking a contractor to build its U.S. Diplomacy Center at the corner of 21st Street and Virginia Avenue NW in Washington, D.C., according to the Washington Business Journal. The department wants to present preliminary designs for the $50 million project to the National Capital Planning Commission for approval during late fall or early winter.

The two-phase, 41,400-square-foot project will include a museum featuring the agency’s history and American diplomacy, as well as an educational center.

Funded through donations, the first phase of the project will cost between $18 million and $24 million and include a reception area; exhibit space; security stations; and a lower level with a café, gift shop, storage space and mechanical rooms.

The department soon will issue a request for proposals. A construction schedule has not yet been confirmed.

Washington, D.C., is using its D.C. Capital Access Program to provide banks with the security needed to make loans to higher-risk city businesses, according to the Washington Business Journal.

The district is asking banks to help small and mid-sized businesses with loans of up to $5 million. The district will use more than $13 million in federal grant funds to establish insurance accounts with the lenders to protect against defaults.
