The unemployment rate in the Washington, D.C., region increased from 6 percent in August to 6.2 percent in September, according to The Washington Post. The rate increased while area recruiters report employers are becoming more interested in hiring.

Although Washington's unemployment rate is below the national average, it still has increased significantly compared with one year ago, when the area’s unemployment rate was 3.9 percent. Many of the job losses have occurred in construction, retail, manufacturing and information technology.

The area's unemployment rate fell in July and August, but analysts suspected the decrease was a result of unemployed people abandoning the job search.

"The monthly numbers are volatile, and the general trend is that unemployment is going up," says James Diffley, group managing director of regional services for IHS Global Insight, Lexington, Mass.

Washington area recruiters say there was a small surge of hiring in September—for the first time this year—with employers actively seeking job candidates. Companies that are hiring include federal contracting firms and wireless phone companies.
