Maryland unemployment rate rises to 7.3 percent
The jobless rate in Maryland increased from 7.2 percent in September to 7.3 percent in October, which is the highest rate since 1983, according to
The Baltimore Sun
.
However, overall, the state's employers still added 1,500 new jobs in October. In October, the government sector added 2,800 jobs, which helped to balance out 3,400 jobs cut in the construction sector.
Job creation has been sporadic during 2009. Maryland had about 51,000 fewer jobs in October than it did at the same time last year.
