Construction has begun on the first phase of improvements for $1.2 billion mixed-use development Westport Waterfront along the Patapsco River in Baltimore, according to The Baltimore Sun.

Maryland's Department of the Environment awarded $620,500 in federal stimulus funds to Turner Development, Baltimore, to help reconstruct the shoreline and create the tidal wetlands along the Westport riverfront. Shoreline construction is necessary to prepare 25 acres of the site for building construction.

Construction of the development’s first major building—a luxury apartment structure—is expected to begin in 2011. Construction of roads, landscaping, utilities and bike paths is set to begin this spring.
